5 Marketing Metrics Small Business Owners Should Track Monthly

A young man writes on a clear wall.
You don't need a wall like this to measure your marketing metrics (unless it inspires you!)

Small business owners who have donned the marketing hat for the first time can quickly be overwhelmed by the huge range of metrics that suddenly want your attention.

Yet even career marketers don’t usually track every single one of them.

Instead, focus on a small selection of simple metrics that are easy to track, but that also give you important information you can use to keep improving your marketing efforts.

  1. Website traffic

One of the simplest metrics to review each month is how many people are visiting your website. Website traffic gives you a clear sense of whether your marketing efforts are actually attracting attention. If you recently ran a campaign, published blog posts, or increased your social media activity, you should see some movement in visitor numbers.

Look at overall traffic trends rather than daily fluctuations. If your visits are gradually increasing month to month, it is a good sign your marketing visibility is improving. If traffic is flat or declining, it may be time to refresh your content, review your search visibility, or increase promotion.

  1. Traffic sources

It is also helpful to understand where your visitors are coming from. Most analytics platforms break this down into categories such as search engines, social media, direct visits, and referrals from other websites.

This information helps you see which marketing channels are actually working. For example, if most visitors arrive through search engines, investing in helpful website content and search optimization could bring more growth. If social media drives a lot of traffic, that may be a channel worth prioritizing. Reviewing traffic sources monthly helps you focus effort where it will have the most impact.

  1. Conversion rate

Traffic alone does not mean much if visitors are not taking action. Conversion rate measures how many visitors complete a desired action on your website. This could be making a purchase, filling out a contact form, booking a consultation, or signing up for a newsletter.

Even small improvements in conversion rate can make a big difference to revenue. If you receive 1,000 visitors per month and increase your conversion rate from two percent to four percent, you have effectively doubled the number of leads or customers without increasing traffic.

Reviewing this metric monthly helps you identify whether your website experience is encouraging people to take the next step.

  1. Lead generation

For many small businesses, especially service-based companies, leads are vital for generating revenue down the line. A lead might be a phone call, email inquiry, form submission, or consultation request.

Tracking the number of leads generated each month gives you a simple way to measure whether your marketing is helping the business grow. It can also help identify seasonal trends. Some months may naturally generate more inquiries than others, and reviewing the data over time helps you plan ahead.

  1. Engagement metrics

Engagement shows how people interact with your marketing – not just whether they see it, but if they actually spend time looking at it, or take an action. On a website, this might include time spent on pages or how many pages visitors view. On social media, engagement might include comments, shares, or saves.

These signals help you understand whether your content resonates with your audience. If engagement is low, the content may not be useful or interesting to your target market. If engagement is high, it suggests your messaging and topics are hitting the mark. Reviewing engagement each month can guide the type of content you produce in the future.
