Tsundoku: It’s a Japanese term for amassing a collection of books but never quite getting around to reading them. And if that term describes you (or even if you do read everything you pick up), this weekend is a celebration for you.
Canadian Independent Bookstore Day is held on the last Saturday of every April, meaning that it’s going to be held this weekend, April 26.
And it’s one of the best excuses you get each year to go out and add to your collection – all while supporting your local, independently owned bookstores.
Independently owned local bookstores in the Sea to Sky
Add these locally owned bookstores to your to-visit list, so you can stock up your to-read list.
Book Mountain
Book Mountain is a delightful treasure trove for all book lovers in Squamish. There’s a mix of old and new books, so you can pick up the latest releases as well as pre-loved bargains in one go. Plus, you’ll find a superb collection of records here, making it a place you can easily lose an entire afternoon to.
Gather Bookshop
Gather Bookshop labels itself as a place of ‘books and lovely things’, and it’s impossible to disagree. From the sun-drenched patio with welcoming outdoor furniture, to the gifts, toys, and fantastic collection of books, you’ll never want to leave.

Armchair Books
Armchair Books is tucked away in Whistler village, and is proud to be the longest running independent bookstore in the Sea to Sky. This is the place to go to pick up anything from a cookbook, to something special for the kids, to a book written about the local area or written by a local author, to your new favourite read. Plus, there’s a rolling ladder.
Squamish Community Bookstore
The Squamish Community Bookstore is part of the Squamish Welcome Centre, and is entirely run by volunteers. Here, every book is just $3 – although bookworms are welcome to donate more if they are able. You’ll never know what books you’ll find here, and every dollar goes towards running the centre and sustaining their programs, so you’ll be shopping for a good cause while you’re there.
The Squamish Book Crawl
Can’t choose just one bookstore? The official Squamish Book Crawl is happening this weekend (although you can complete an unofficial one of your own at any time).
The Official Book Crawl invites you to pick up a stamp card, stop by all three Squamish locations mentioned above as well as the Squamish Public Library, and get your stamps from each location. Once you have all four, drop off your stamp card at any location to go in the draw to win a big basket full of bookish gifts and cozy surprises!
This is a great opportunity to shop local, support small businesses in the Sea to Sky, and stock up your book selection!
